Below is some advice to consider once you’ve secured an interview:
- Google the company – Take notes about the industry, work done, notable facts and reasons for interest
- Look at website
- Look at Wikipedia
- Look at revenue
- Look at Glassdoor or Reddit reviews
- Have your resume and/or LinkedIn open for reference
- Get and analyze job description
- Copy and paste into notepad
- Highlight the things you’d be good at and have tangible historical experience & success stories
- Highlight where you want to improve
- Highlight any concerns you have to raise during the interview
- Have a notepad ready with any questions for the interviewer listed out
- Prepare at least 2 questions to ask such as “What is your Work from Home policy?” & “How is career progression handled within the organisation?”
- Depending the time allocated for the interview, you may only get to ask 2 or 3 brief questions. If you have other questions, be sure to follow up. Your interview should be treated as a 2 way street, not just them evaluating you.
- Ensure you take notes when they tell you important information
- Ensure you capture your feedback, good/bad/questions remaining
- No matter the location:
- Smile while talking to ensure voice/tone inflection is positive
- Nod, listen carefully
- Bring a glass of water; it can help create natural pauses which allow you to think, and helps rest your voice over the duration of an interview where you will largely be talking non-stop.
- If it’s a
- Phone call:
- Ensure WiFi/data connection is good
- Smile while talking to ensure voice/tone inflection is positive
- Video:
- Tested your streaming set up and software prior to the interview
- Hair, face, teeth, clothing should be nice
- Internet connection good
- Background either bland house or blurred if it’s messy/weird
- Consistent lighting, not directly shining on the camera
- Smile, nod, listen carefully
- Phone call:
