When bringing in a new business analyst, or handing over the ownership of a project, there is a lot of knowledge and context that needs to be imparted. Whilst not a fulsome guide, here is some advice for bringing another person up to speed, particularly if you’ve been on one of those difficult projects.
- Write up a simple list of what you’ve been working on, as well as actions/tasks you might have had on your personal short term roadmap. For each item in the list:
- Summary of what it’s about; Try to give frank status assessment of where things are without being too bleak/negative.
- Links to documentation/any artefacts you or the team have created.
- Relevant stakeholders/SMEs/devs, so they know who to talk to about the item.
- Any blockers/risks/difficulties/existing stakeholder opinions they might need to be aware of.
It’s not easy but it’s important to provide honest and transparent insight into the current state of a project, without providing too much negative overlay. You want to give realistic advice and guidance, not crush the spirit of the new person taking over.
